The Library of the Slovak Technical Museum is a special library that belongs to the network of special libraries of museums and galleries in the library system.
It acquires, processes, protects and makes available library and information funds that are consistent in content with the focus and mission of the Slovak Technical Museum, serving to disseminate knowledge of science and technology, scientific research and knowledge of the history of science and technology.
The library, through its focus and specialization of the library fund, builds a specialized library fund that is used by professional employees of the Slovak Technical Museum in connection with the fulfillment of tasks in scientific research, collection-building and cultural and educational activities. It contains professional literature and journals from various scientific disciplines. The majority of the content is focused on science, technology and applied sciences.
The dating of the establishment of the STM library begins with the adoption of the first temporary statute (June 20, 1947) of the Technical Museum in Košice. At that time, the Technical Museum in Košice was among the first museums in Slovakia to systematize the position of librarian and pay attention to the expansion and work of the library, which provided its services in the preparation of new exhibitions.
The library collection was systematically built from the establishment of the library. The basic library collection of the emerging library consisted of acquired literature. It contained approximately 1000 volumes and came from the Országos Magyar Muszaki Museum. The books were mostly technical in nature.
The basic library collection was gradually supplemented by other newly acquired publications,
mostly in German and Hungarian, or Czech. It was mostly literature published in the years 1800 - 1938.
Since 1951, the library collection has been systematically and professionally processed. It currently contains 19,080 library units. It is presented by books, magazines, collections, encyclopedias, educational and foreign-language dictionaries.
Among the rarest specimens are old prints published in the years 1700 - 1800 in the number of 67 titles. Then there are historical library documents - old prints published until 1918.
And we cannot leave out Slovak and foreign-language prints published in the territory of today's Slovakia in the years 1900 - 1918. Most of the library collection is focused on science, technology and applied sciences, which are the subject of the museum's activities.
A special part of the library collection is the extensive and valuable reference library of the specialized outpost of the Slovak Technical Museum, the Museum of Aviation. This reference library contains professional literature and magazines focused on various areas of aviation and aviation technology. Many of the books are literary documents of technical development, but there are also popular and educational works among them. It also contains foreign-language works, mainly in Russian and English. The reference library began to be built in 2014. It currently contains 1634 library units.
Library documents are borrowed in accordance with the mission and special character of the Library of the Slovak Technical Museum. They are borrowed in absentia (home) and in person (to the study room).
Due to the internal constitutional function of the library, absentee borrowing is possible only with the consent of a superior library employee, as absentee borrowing is provided exclusively to employees of the Slovak Technical Museum.
The library provides interested parties with the possibility of face-to-face study and consultation at pre-arranged dates. For study, everyone can search for the desired document in advance in the form of the online catalog of the Tritius program.
